“Nature and its Classification”
1st International Conference hosted by the AHRC funded Metaphysics of Science Project
University of Birmingham, 12th-14th October 2007
As part of a three year AHRC funded Metaphysics of Science project investigating the closely-related topics of causation, laws, dispositions and natural kinds, the universities of Birmingham, Bristol and Nottingham invite paper submissions for the international conference “Nature and its Classification”. The broad topic of the conference is natural kinds as they appear across the literature in metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. Submissions should be suitable for a 20 minute presentation (maximum submission length is 2,500 words), followed by 10 minutes of discussion, and we actively encourage submissions from postgraduate students. The deadline for submissions is 20th August 2007.
Papers should be submitted as an email attachment to email@example.com, preferably in pdf format, (alternatively in MS word or RTF.) Please also ensure that each submission is accompanied by a separate page containing the title of the paper, the author’s name, institutional affiliation and status, both an email and postal address, and a short abstract of the paper. Please make the subject of your email submission: “Nature and its Classification Paper Submission”.
Authors will receive notification of acceptance at least one month before the conference. Some papers submitted after the deadline (depending on the volume of submissions) may still be considered, provided the author contacts the convenor(s) in advance indicating the intention to submit a paper. However, acceptance is not guaranteed at this later stage.
The conference will run from Friday 12th October until Sunday 14th October, and will be hosted by the University of Birmingham.
We are also pleased to announce the following featured keynote speakers:
Alexander Bird; Richard Boyd; John Dupré; Paul Griffiths; Joseph LaPorte; Ruth Millikan; Jonathan Schaffer.
Registration for the conference is now open. A form to register for the conference can be found on the conference website, as can details of the
conference venue, accommodation and a preliminary timetable at: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/metaphysicsofscience/natureanditsclassification.html
The conference fee for registration is £45, and £20 for graduate students, before 1st September 2007; registration after that date will be £80, and £35 respectively. The booking deadline is 30th September 2007.
