Thanks for the second part, BT. Foucault remains critical, I would say, rather than skeptical. It was interesting in the first part how he humbled himself after Chomsky spoke, saying he wasn’t so far in developing his theories on an ideal society as Chomsky. I don’t think Foucault was “opposed” to debates as he seems to be quite good at it but he thought any sort of Platonic dialogue emerging out of these “telecommunication exercises” as a truth effect, was problematic. Foucault on Habermas: “I am quite interested in [Habermas’] work, although I know he completely disagrees with my views. While I, for my part, tend to be a little more in agreement with what he says, I have always had a problem insofar as he gives communicative relations this place which is so important and, above all, a function that I would call ‘utopian.'”

I would love to know what foucault ate before that debate. Somebody seriously should have given that man a tooth-pick.
